General anesthesia (GA) may be required to manage kids during a dental procedure or elder ones who are nervous during the dental treatments. Kids dental care is very crucial as it may lead to sever issues in the future.

What is a general anesthesia (GA)?

General anesthesia (GA) can be used on kids during the dental procedure to ensure that the kid is fully asleep and completely cooperates to pedodontist and also to avoid pain. General anesthesia is given by a doctor called an anesthesiologist. The anesthesiologist stays with the kid during the complete treatment process and carefully monitors during dental treatment. Afterwards, the anesthesiologist will ensure the kid wakes up as relaxed as possible.

How will my child be given the anesthesia?

The anesthesiologist will decide which method is most appropriate to give anesthesia to your child. The most general way is to give injection through a cannula (like a thin plastic straw) into a vein. This is done by rubbing a numbing cream on your kid’s arm to reduce the uneasiness caused by the injection. The doctor will decide which method is most appropriate to give anesthesia to your kid.

There are also other ways of giving general anesthesia such as through mouth or through nose, depending on the requirement

With kids who are extremely sensitive, the doctor may choose to give your kid a medicine to drink to relieve anxiety before starting the procedure.

Are there any precautions on eating habits to be considered before general anesthesia?

Children get irritated when they feel hungry. It’s a fact. Having said that, fasting is extremely important before giving general anesthesia, as it reduces the risk of vomiting during or after the completion of dental treatment.

Pediatric patients at Ankura Dental are required to fast according to the fasting guidelines provided before the date of the procedure. These will be discussed by the dental surgeon and nursing staff at the hospital. Kids dental care is of priority for us.

When a dentist has an all-day surgical list, younger patients and children with special medical needs must be seen earlier on the list.

Are parents welcome to stay when the general anesthesia is given?

Either of the parents is allowed to come inside the theatre, he or she can stay until your kid is asleep, once the kid sleeps you will be escorted to the waiting room.

How safe is general anesthesia and is there any side-effects?

The amount of risk will depend on your kid’s Medical history and the nature of the surgery for which general anesthesia is given. When compared to other treatments, the dental procedure is a low-risk procedure. You will be able to discuss anything with the Pedodontist (Pediatric Dentist) or the anesthesiologist beforehand only.

In Majority of the cases, children recover quickly and are back to their usual activities. Some kids may have side effects but are usually mild. A sore throat, headache, nausea can occur but can be treated accordingly.

If we are talking about the more serious complications of general anesthesia that may include an Allergic reactions and breathing difficulties during or after anesthesia which are not very common.

We cannot eradicate risks completely but with trained dental staff, technology, and medications, the risks and complications can be reduced.

Having a General anesthesia for dental work is considered elective surgery. So, to reduce the risk of anesthesia, we perform treatment only when your kid is feeling well and has optimal health. If your kid has a fever or flu on the day of surgery then we will re-book your appointment to another day.

Younger children are being treated under General anesthesia at a regular basis under the supervision of Pedodontist,  anesthesiologist and other specialist at Ankura Dental clinic.
