What is Zirconia?
Zirconium is a chemical element with atomic number 40 and symbol ‘Zr’ in the periodic table. It is known for its hardness, resistant to corrosion and various other properties similar to steel. It can’t be found in pure state in nature. However it can be obtained through complex physico-chemical process. In the periodic chart, it is located next to Titanium (Ti). For this reason their properties are very similar.
Which form of Zirconia is used in Dentistry?
Zirconium ceramic is obtained through a comprehensive cycles of reductive chlorination (Kroll process). At the end of this process, zirconium oxide powder is attained which is primary ceramic and remains no longer a metal.
ZIRCONIA is a powder that is also used as a pigment in various commercially available white paints, and also as abrasives. At room temperature it exists in a monolithic phase. This state of existence is extremely brittle and fragile.
To improve the properties of zirconia (ZrO2), other elements are added to the compound to stabilize the molecular structure: ex. Yttrium (Y). Through a mixture and sintering process, the final ceramic structure is stabilized and is known as Y-TZP (Yttrium stabilized Tetragonal Zirconium Polycrystal). The Y-TZP ceramic is the material that is used in dentistry as ZIRCONIA.

For these favourable reasons it is used increasingly in surgery for ear, finger and hip prostheses. Applications for dentistry are found in zirconia crowns, bridges, dental implants and pins. The material’s natural white base allows individual colour blending in predefined dentin shades.
The biotechnical characteristics of zirconia result in high quality crowns, bridges and implants with excellent aesthetic appearance and biocompatibility.

Disadvantages of a Zirconia Crown
The disadvantages of zirconia are negligible but yet worth mentioning.
The tough, durable nature of a zirconia crown can work against it as well as in its favour. This material has an abrasive quality which can cause friction against the root of the tooth as well as other teeth.
It must be highlighted that dental specialist in the field of prosthodontics are trained and qualified to make individual assessment of each patient and customize treatment plan using zirconia based prosthetics that can cater your functional and aesthetic demands. Hence at Ankura dental hospital, a comprehensive diagnostic assessment by our team of Prosthodontist must be done. How is a Zirconia Crown Cemented?
The process is similar to that for other crowns. It involves two stages: preparation of tooth structure (first stage) and the fitting of the crown (second stage).
The first stage is where your teeth are assessed and measured for a crown. Our highly qualified and vastly experienced Prosthodontist will discuss the procedure with you before preparing your affected tooth. This preparation involves the cleaning of the tooth before reshaping (which reduces its size) with a small drill.
A small sliver of tooth is removed under a local anaesthetic which ensures that the tooth is the correct shape for the crown. A mould is made with dental putty which you will be asked to bite into. This is used as a guide for the production of your new crown at our dental laboratory which has the best standards of technical equipments with high precision.
The second stage is where you will be fitted with your new crown. The tooth which will receive this crown is roughened with a special dental acid which scratches the surface and increases the bond between crown and tooth.
The crown is then fitted onto your tooth. The dentist will check its appearance and fit before cementing it into position. It is then given a final polish.
A zirconia crown must be cared for in the same way as your natural teeth. .
At Ankura dental clinic we lay emphasis in not just choosing the right zirconia property but also on its long term maintenance. With our systematic and well organized periodic recalls we monitor the service and integrity of your prosthesis. Replacement with metal-free/full zirconia restorations possible?
Replacement of conventional (precious) metal-based restorations with zirconia is entirely possible, but should only be carried out by dental specialist who have undertaken special training in this field.
Aesthetic comparison of zirconia vs. Conventional metal based crowns?
Zirconia framework is translucent and far superior to the opaque appearance of metal-ceramic. It delivers far more superior natural appearance with the adjacent teeth in comparison to the conventional metal based crowns.
Hence it is highly indicated for the replacement of front teeth for its esthetic properties while suggested for back teeth primarily owing to its high strength and durability.
How does cost compare with metal-ceramic?
Zirconia restorations are equal to or marginally more expensive than metal-ceramic restorations.

I had 6 crowns of monolithic zirconium put in my mouth by Dr. Brauer from Tuscany Dental in Calgary, Alberta. The monolithic crowns stand out like old smokers teeth, when I laugh or smile. My teeth are white, except the zirconium crowns. It looks horrible! I would make sure I was getting the HT Zirconium – all zirconium is not equal. Beware! Ask questions about what is being put in your mouth in advance. I went to 2 other dentists to find out that I did not have HT zirconia (which is translucent and very natural looking).
