What is Clear Path?

Clear path Aligner system has been introduced in 2008 as a new orthodontic tool to treat orthodontic cases. The aim of adult orthodontic treatment has been described as balance among tooth alignment, occlusal contact, dentofacial esthetics, function, and relative stability . A recent survey estimated that 45% of adults were dissatisfied with their dental appearance, with 20% considering some form of orthodontic treatment to improve the alignment of their teeth. There are three main groups of adult patients: those who have had orthodontic treatment in their teens but experienced relapse, those who have never been treated, and older patients who may need orthodontics in conjunction with multidisciplinary treatment involving restorations. Recent advances in orthodontic materials have made adult orthodontics far more appealing in a wider 2 range of cases. The first aligner is more passive in nature and gives the necessary time for the patient to get adjusted to the forthcoming series of clear aligners.

This article demonstrates the use of the system for the Clear Path three-dimensional aligner is a removable, resilient polyurethane aligner that snaps over the teeth and the mucosa and exerts pressure until the teeth attain their predetermined positions. Clear Path aligners are also used for arch expansion, anterior space closure, reduction of overjet, correction of deep bite, cross-bite and minor rotations. Uncontrolled tipping is the type of tooth movement that occurs with a Clear Path aligner. The amount of relative intrusion and extrusion to program can be determined by estimating the location of the center of rotation of the teeth. This is approximately 41% of the root length apical to the faciolingual crestal bone. Occlusal forces seat the appliance for a better fit as also produces the necessary forces and moments required for treatment correction of Angle’s Class I malocclusion with midline diastema, spacing & rotations.

The dentist makes a set of moulds and regular diagnostic records (Photos+ X-rays) which are sent to the respective labs. These are dental aligners which are alternatives to regular dental braces and are used to bring teeth movement so that we can bring about Orthodontic correction.

The patient is provided with these aligners at the beginning of treatment. The impressions are then scanned by the lab and a set of sequential aligners are made. These may range from 10 sets to 25 sets depending upon the complexity of the case. These aligners are numbered so that they don’t get mixed up. Each set of aligners are worn for a period of two weeks. Once you finish wearing one set of aligners you move further to the next set.

Severe orthodontic problems usually do not get completely corrected using these aligners. It is recommended for the treatment of mild to moderate cases as well as for patient who is conscious of wearing dental braces due to their occupation or otherwise. These aligners can be removed for a short period for social functions and are quite inconspicuous even when in use. In our experience patients are very comfortable as they offer an option of having Invisible braces kind of option whereas still bringing about movement of teeth to get the desired result.
